International Moving FAQ: Your Most Asked Questions Answered

International Moving FAQ: Your Most Asked Questions Answered

Quick answer: Start planning an international move as early as possible. Expect your shipment to go through several stages: packing, transit, customs clearance and final delivery. Gather your destination's import documents early, keep essentials with you while your shipment travels, and rely on your relocation coordinator for updates along the way.

Below are answers to the questions Atlas International customers ask most.

Planning and timing

When should I start planning my international move?

Start as early as possible, but ideally 3-4 months before your move date. International moves require coordination across packing, transportation, customs and destination services. Your destination country may also require specific forms or documents before your shipment can clear customs, so starting early gives you time to prepare.

When should I schedule the packing of goods from my home?

Whenever possible, avoid scheduling packing for the same day you must leave your home. Allowing extra time can help accommodate weather, power outages, cleaning, forgotten items, or other last-minute changes. Your coordinator can help you choose a packing schedule based on your move date and destination requirements.

How long will my international move take?

Transit times vary based on your destination, shipment method, customs requirements, port conditions, and other factors. Your international relocation coordinator will explain the expected timeline for your move and keep you informed if conditions affect the schedule.

Shipping and delays

What transportation options are available?

Depending on your needs, belongings may travel by road, sea or air. Vehicle transportation options may also be available, for certain automobiles. Your coordinator will recommend an option based on your destination, timeline, shipment, and transportation requirements.

Why can international shipping take longer than expected?

International shipping has several stages: transport to the port, sea or air transit, customs clearance and final delivery. Port congestion, weather, transportation availability and customs processing can all affect the schedule. Some delays are outside your moving team's control, but your coordinator will share important updates along the way.

Does my shipment's arrival at the port mean it's ready for delivery?

Not yet. After it arrives at the destination port, your shipment must clear customs before delivery can be arranged. Customs varies depending on the country and shipment. Your coordinator will tell you when clearance is complete and your shipment can move to the next stage.

Customs and documents

What is customs clearance?

Customs clearance is the review of your shipment and documents before your belongings can enter the destination country. Requirements vary by country and may include identification, residency records, financial documents or other supporting information. In some countries, you may need to arrive before your shipment or complete part of the process in person.

How do I know which documents I'll need?

Import requirements are different for every country. Review the current import guidance for your destination as early as possible and work closely with your coordinator. Your coordinator can help explain which requirements apply to your move, but it is important to begin gathering documents early. Your move coordinator will provide resources and assistance to ensure you have a list of all required documentation.

Are there items I can't include in my shipment?

Yes. Restrictions vary by country, but food, cosmetics, batteries, flammable liquids, perishable goods and other sensitive items may be restricted or prohibited. Before packing these items, ask your coordinator whether they can be included.

Cost

How is my final moving cost determined?

Your final cost is based on the services your move requires and the confirmed weight or volume of your shipment after packing. Your coordinator can explain what's included and answer questions about your quote.

During your move

What should I keep with me while my shipment is in transit?

Keep clothing, medications, important documents, electronics, valuables and other essentials you may need before delivery. Because transportation or customs delays can happen, plan for the season at your destination and for the chance your belongings arrive later than expected.
